ST. LOUIS POST- DISPATCH WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 30, 1987 Pilot Prevented Fire But Also Delayed Aid PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) Assistance for an Eastern Airlines jetliner that cracked open after a hard landing was delayed because the pilot shut down electrical power to prevent a fire, says a spokesman for Pensacola Regional Airport. That action cut off the plane's radios, the spokesman said. Firefighters took three minutes to reach the plane once airport officials realized that it had failed to taxi to the terminal after landing Sunday night in fog and rain, said the airport's spokesman, Carlton Proctor.

"There was apparently no communication to the tower that there was a crash," Proctor said. "After a while, when the plane didn't come back from the runway, they determined something was wrong." Officials also said they had no word on what might have caused the accident. The plane had been in service 19 years with only minor maintenance problems and none that could be related to the accident, said Karen M. Ceremsak, an Eastern Airlines spokeswoman. Last year, an X-ray examination of the plane's fuselage detected a sixinch crack in a floor-beam keel fitting near where the crack occurred, according to service reports collected by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.

The cracked fitting at the center of the plane's left wheel well was replaced Feb. 14, 1986, according to the records. FAA official Jack Barker said "that may or may not have been a factor." Three people were slightly injured as passengers and crew members used emergency chutes to leave the plane. The injured were treated at emergency rooms at two hospitals and were released, authorities said. Records from Escambia County Emergency Medical Services: show that a call for help was received at 11:47 p.m.

Sunday. Airport and Federal Aviation Administration officials said the plane landed at 11:40 p.m. Carolyn Fleming, a passenger, said she had walked about halfway to the airport terminal, a mile from the plane, before rescue trucks arrived at the disabled DC-9. "If that plane had started burning, they couldn't have saved us," said Fleming, one of 105 people aboard the twin-engine jet. Most of the passengers made it to the terminal before a baggage truck from Delta Air Lines began picking people up, Fleming said.

Fleming said a flight attendant who walked with her through a driving rain had suggested that the downpour also may have helped avert a disaster by preventing sparks from flying as the plane dragged its tail almost 7,000 feet down the runway.
