Who was the very first structural engineer? That person is believed to be Imhotep, from the late 27th century BC. While it’s hard to say with absolute certainty, Imhotep is believed to be the architect and structural engineer of the very first pyramid to have been built:The Pyramid of Djoser, located south of Cairo in Egypt, shown in the image below. The base of the step pyramid is 109 meters x 121 meters, and its total height is 62.5 meters (205 ft). It’s made from cut limestone blocks and believed to be the earliest large-scale cut stone construction made by man. Under the pyramid is a burial chamber consisting of a labyrinth of tunnels that total 6 km (3.7 miles) in length!Imhotep, the Old Kingdom of Egypt, and all of the innovators and doers who came after them paved the way for the modern structures we use today. I’m thankful for all of you architects, engineers, and construction professionals who carry on Imhotep’s dreams of building ambitious structures! P.S. - I'm on a 60-day mission to help at least 3 structural/forensic engineers find a career advancement opportunity. 👉 If you're a structural/forensic engineer in the USA who is looking for a career advancement opportunity, please DM me. 👇 If you've ever been curious about what it's like working for yourself, read on.𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐦𝐲 𝐃𝐀𝐘 12 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐬:-- Responded to post comments, sent new connection requests, commented on industry-friends’ posts, and started new conversations.-- Had a great call with a structural engineering hiring manager about their recruiting needs.-- Shared some very insightful emails with an engineering hiring manager regarding salary research I provided for them.-- Wrote and prepared posts for this weekend and next week.

Every week, I get messages from engineers asking if I can refer them or help them find a job in Canada. So, I decided to help out with my two cents. Here is an example conversation I had today with my friend, let’s call him John Doe. John messaged me:“Thank you for connecting with me. Having recently migrated to Canada, I'm on the lookout for opportunities in civil/geotechnical engineering. … I hope you'll take a moment to review my attached resume for any potential openings at your company. I'm excited about the possibility of contributing to your team and am grateful for your consideration.”My reply:Hey John, Thanks for reaching out, let me help you out. Your resume already showcases some impressive experience in the geotechnical sector. Why not tailor your resume more specifically to this field?Having immigrated and worked in Canada myself, I have observed hiring practices across four companies, I can tell you that specialists are often preferred over generalists. Given this, I'd recommend focusing less on project management, especially since your experience leans more towards design and engineering. For now, as you're new to the Canadian job market, it might be best to aim for roles that get you in the door. Once you've gained some local experience, you can then consider aiming for coordination roles or similar positions elsewhere. If you're eyeing project management positions, just be aware that these typically require a P.M.P. license and a P.Eng in Canada, so you might want to reconsider including this on your resume until you meet those qualifications. Also, a strong LinkedIn presence can really make a difference. Recruiters often reach out to candidates who have robust profiles. So, consider beefing up your LinkedIn details, expanding your network, and clearly defining your expertise—whether that's in civil engineering and specific areas like water and wastewater, transportation, marines, oil & gas or mining, or if you're leaning towards geotechnical roles. If I were you, I also wouldn’t ignore roles in modeling, especially considering your experience with Revit. The industry is really chasing people with software skills, and those proficient in BIM are often at the top of the list.An example would be: "I'm a Geotechnical Engineer specializing in the design and analysis of foundation systems within the geotechnical sector, proficient in PLAXIS, GeoStudio, Revit and Civil 3D."Project coordination roles don’t often mean attractive compensation. The industry prefers specialists, remember that.Once you’ve polished up your resume and LinkedIn profile, I’ll make sure to pass them along to the interested parties.Warm regards,AydimirP.S. More is more…I am starting to see a more competitive candidate market for Structural Engineers and Structural Draftspersons when they are job hunting or looking for new career opportunities in Sydney.Opportunities are still out there but whereas 6 months ago, you might have been the only person going for an interview with a company, now the interview process is more competitive with up to 3 or 4 candidates being interviewed for the role. It’s important that in a more competitive space that your CV stands out from the crowd. Many CVs that I see are written in a less is more approach, very scant information about career history or written in a very generalist way, “I liaised with clients”“I mentored a team”“I worked on Residential projects” In an increasingly competitive market, when it comes to presenting your CV for a role, more is more, don’t get me wrong, I’m not expecting a CV to go on for pages and pages, but I am expecting more than I am typically seeing.🔸 More context around projects – type of projects worked on, size of projects worked on, where were the projects?🔹 More understanding of your specific involvement on projects – what role did you assume on the project, how did this fit into the project structure, running projects autonomously? If so what size?🔸 More understanding of your experience visiting project sites – inspections? Design resolution? report writing? 🔹 More understanding of your client interaction – meeting with clients? corresponding with clients? by phone? by email? (liaising is a great word but doesn’t tell me or the client much)🔸 More in depth understanding of managerial / mentoring responsibilities – how many people? in what manner? Junior Engineers? Draftspersons?🔹 More about what you designed / drafted – what materials used? what specifically designed / drafted? (Concrete, steel, timber, beams, slabs, columns, foundation, shoring, piling etc.)🔸 More software skills – what software was used and how proficient are you with the software that you are listing on your CV?From my experience a lot of Engineers find it difficult writing a CV and trying to sell themselves.I personally feel that if you apply the above structure (no pun intended) to your CV, you don’t need to try and sell yourself, your CV will sell you for you…What do you think? Have I missed anything?#structuralengineering #structuralhiring #moreismore #cvtips

Write only Architect. Engineer is different than Architect. An Architect can not be an Engineer and an Engineer can not be an Architect. These are two different fields of Technocrates.
