I’m really thankful this place is free or donation based once a month- as an educator I make very very little money- the art was beautiful and seeing a history of California as someone from the east coast was great. They had interactive exhibits too which I loved.

Awesome experience... Only visited the California portion. Still spent 3 hours!! Cafe food was amazing wtheck who knew a museum would have such upscale cuisine.All that said I'm definitely going back to view the rest of the museum I did not go to the top level (most likely best part) there are three levels, on this day we visited the mid level. We are going back next weekend. This is an amazing experience for couples, singles and families I would recommend this experience for everyone. Truly educational and great fun.

This is a great museum with art, history, science, and special exhibits, and a big garden. The first Sundays of every month are free days, and you can get in for free on the first Saturday if you have a Bank of America card, since this museum participates in the Museums on Us program. There is paid parking, but Lake Merritt BART is only a few blocks away. The museum was very clean and had security guards. Also, there's a gift shop and restaurant. If you're looking to spend a day in a detailed museum with exhibits for all ages, this is the place for you.

Located on the outer edge of the museum (BART side) is an amazing spot called TOWN FARE and we had to try their Brunch...they have a patio/lounge area that has a bar while you wait...They had a DJ playing some really good music, the Food was DELICIOUS...We had to try the Chicken and Waffles, Fried Pork Chops with Grits, eggs and a Biscuit, Deviled Egg of the month, Blackened Cat Fish (half eaten in pic, sorry was sooooo good), Doscuit Bites and Orange and Guava Mimosas...but best of all was the vibe! Great friendly Staff and Customers..Ran into Channel 2 news anchor Dave Clark....a Beautiful way to spend a Sunday Morning in the Bay Area

The rotating exhibits are totally worth seeing. They are usually inspiring, interactive, and community centered. The historical section is a little staid...and situates ohlone people in the past. Could use a refresh.I loved the afrofuturism exhibit, the hella feminist exhibit, and was most recently impressed by the Malaquís Montoya exhibit (printmaking and activist focused) and the into the brightness exhibit (showcasing disabled artists and their work).There is also a lovely performance + food + community event here every Friday evening. This is an Oakland gem. Please visit and support this museum so that it continues to exist!!

The natural sciences section really left a lot to be desired. The special exhibition looked like art made by children which some of it was unique, but still left a lot to be desired as well. compared to the California Academy of sciences in San Francisco, this museum truly fails greatly in comparison. And one of the sections in the natural sciences, there was a homeless man sleeping on the floor and security didn’t even say anything to him. If you’re looking for an interactive, excellent fascinating museum, I would pass on this one. This is more for children.

What a gem. We took our 9 year old daughter here and there was so much to see and play with for her and some sophisticated art upstairs for us to enjoy. The whole experience was a positive one. Easy to park, not crowded, plenty of art and information to discuss as well as great food in the attached restaurant. Great for a day trip in the Bay Area.

Here you will find various topics on display about the arrival of the Native Americans several years ago. Tools they used for fishing, among other topics such as Science, gastronomy, art and exhibitions by various artists. They have extensive security, so feel free to go with your children. They have areas especially for the little ones. I was able to see a great variety of stuffed animals. A nice place to soak up history.

We went there with low expectations. But we were surprised to see how beautiful and spacious it was. The museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 11 am to 5 pm. Friday from 5 pm- 9 pm. It has garage parking available. Wheelchair accessibility is available. It took us 2 Hours and 20 mins to enjoy low and intermediate levels. We spent only 10 mins in Art level( we went there at 2.30 pm and the museum closed at 5 pm). The staff are friendly and informative. Natural science was on the low level and it showcased all the inhabitants of California. All of the animals and birds exhibited there looked real. The exhibits of the water bodies looked like real water bodies with bubbles and waves. The Bear trap was a good attraction. The boat's moving illusion was good. The intermediate level showcased the California history. It has some of the weird things, big things and mystery things. The wagon, car and aeroplane were interesting to watch and know about the history. Some of the artifacts were guns, items Native Indians used, items used by minors. The cabin with the kitchen, which was built by a rich minor, was informative and interesting. Throughout the museum kids have activities to try. The upper level showcased Art.

Clean, modern museum with rotating exhibits as well as permanent historical exhibits. They have the historical section is fantastic and takes you all the way through ancient history through modern times complete with archaeological objects.Food available in the cafeteria.They are rather strict about backpacks and masking so be prepared for that.

This is my second time at this museum. The first was for the hip hop exhibit and Angela Davis for my most recent. Their main exhibits have been really great. A docent gave us a tour of the California history the last time. This time I went into Natural History area which was ok for kids. The gardens have great views and great on a sunny day. I went to the restaurant this time which was pretty decent too. Hit up Mad Oak afterwards for co*cktails which is only a block and a half away.

Only visited the California history section of this museum (and the gift shop, of course) but I really enjoyed all the exhibits. Lots of interactive media and displays.I went on a random late Wednesday afternoon to kill time before an appointment - it was very quiet and enjoyable to walk around. However, I'm sure on the weekends or during school field trips it probably descends into pure chaos.

I really had a good time here but didn't get to see as much of it as I wanted too. The History of California room was the most important area for me. The art gallery was amazing they even included local artists. The important thing to know, if you have an EBT (foodstamp) card you get in for $1 and they validate if you park in the garage

Worth the money! They have so many things on display, your feet are gonna get tired. It took me more than 3 hours and it was an amazing experience. The only complaint I have is they do not show proper directions. You might be puzzled on where to go and start from.

it's a fairly big museum, with interesting exhibitions! I bought my tickets at the counter when I arrived. (visited back in nov'23) it's also right by lake meritt so you can pop right over when you're done with the museum.
