How do I find my prospectus for an ETF? ›

The SEC's EDGAR system, as well as Internet search engines, can help you locate a specific ETF prospectus. You can also find prospectuses on the websites of the financial firms that sponsor a particular ETF, as well as through your broker.

U.S. ETFs. The annual and semiannual ETF reports for the U.S. ETFs cover the one-year and six-month periods ended December 31st and June 30th, respectively, and are available within 60 days of the indicated period-ends. All investments involve risk, including possible loss of principal.

Rowe Price offers functional news and marketing information. Vanguard does not offer real-time streaming news, but does offer news articles. Overall, T. Rowe Price has a small edge over Vanguard for their overall account and research amenities offerings.

Most companies have a corporate website with a section labeled Investor Relations that should have available a wide range of company documentation, including quarterly and annual reports. Many investment websites may also offer links directly to a company's or fund's prospectus documents.

To search for a mutual fund, ETF, or variable annuity, click on Company Filings under the search bar at the top of the home page to get to the EDGAR search page. On the left side, you'll find tools optimized to search for Mutual Funds and Variable Annuities. You can use the Mutual Funds tool to also search for ETFs.

For most ETFs, selling after less than a year is taxed as a short-term capital gain. ETFs held for longer than a year are taxed as long-term gains. If you sell an ETF, and buy the same (or a substantially similar) ETF after less than 30 days, you may be subject to the wash sale rule.

The ETF fact sheet provides information on the fund's historical performance, including returns and volatility. The returns are typically presented as the average annual returns over the past one, three, five and 10 years.

Experts agree that for most personal investors, a portfolio comprising 5 to 10 ETFs is perfect in terms of diversification.

Where to find a prospectus. One way to locate a prospectus is to visit the SEC's Electronic Data Gathering, Analysis and Retrieval (EDGAR) database. Search for a specific prospectus using the company or mutual fund name, ticker symbol, filing date or their central index key (CIK).
