Looking for a load or two for my 223 Rem. I have some Sierra GK 62gr I’d like to load up for deer.

The two best powders I have for it are Varget and 4895. Suggestions?

Rifle is a Kimber MT 1:8

H335 and 65 SGK has been an accurate load in my AR’s and my Kimber MT. Mine sports a 1-8” Hawk Hill barrel, and does better with 55gr Vmax, about the same with 62gr tsx’s. My favorite round easily.

I shoot the 65 grain SGK in my .223's over 27 grains of Varget/CCI400. I run an overall length of 2.240 so they'll run through the mags of my AR's. I use the same length in my Remington bolt gun, never tried any seating depth tuning because I don't care about keeping different loads of the same caliber for different rifles. These fun sub moa in all my rifles.

I have a couple of boxes of the 62 grain version which I haven't done anything with yet. My understanding is the 62 grain was made to provide a little shorter version of the popular 65 grain SGK that would stabilize more easily in slower twist barrels. Going to try them one of these days in my 14 twist Swift. If I were going to shoot them in my .223's I'd use the same load I do with the 65's to start with, tweek it if that didn't work for some reason.

Jack, my Montana loves 55gr ttsx and is the load I hunt with. Tiny little groups from it.

I bought some and developed a fall turkey / coyote load for my Baikal 12/223 combo gun. It has a 1 in 12 twist barrel but the 62gr stabilize fine here in WV. The load I settled on was 21.5gr of WIN 748 with CCI 400 primers in R-P range pickup brass. It's a consistent ½inch load at 100yds.

All that being said, I haven't shot anything with them yet so I have no on game experiences for you.

About 5 years ago I shot a fat doe with a 55gr Hornady GMX and a stiff charge of Varget. 158yds was the shot and it put a bigger entrance/exit wound than any .243 I've ever seen.

Tzone, since others have mentioned their 65 SGK loads, I'll chime in. N140 is my preferred with CFE 223 as runner up.

I shoot CFE223 and the 65gr GKBT from an 18” suppressed AR. It runs interchangeably with my 77TMK/H4895 load for 200yd POI but is notably gassier. Both will put a hurt on a hog.

65gr gameking over 26.5gr of Varget, CCI 400 loaded to 2.26”. Shoots amazingly well out of my 1:9 Rock River and my scratch built 1:7”. Plenty of deer and pigs have fallen to that bullet.

My montana didn’t get great velocities for cfe 223 and this bullet but boy were the low loads damn accurate: factory length, fed primers, lapua brass 25.4grs found ring string at 2819, SD of 4. ¾” 5 shot groups at 200 yards.
The other sweetheart load was 62gr ttsx with 26.5 of cfe, similar groups and 3084 fps, SD of 7.
