The glimmer of hope the Mets had on Thursday, collapsed over the weekend, as New York lost two in a row against the Arizona Diamondbacks including a 5-4 heartbreaker on Sunday. New York’s bullpen continues to be a source of frustration for fans and teammates, as the Mets carried a 4-3 lead all the way through the eighth inning, only to watch it vanish in the ninth as Jake Diekman gave up a pair of runs.

Pete Alonso got the scoring started for New York with an RBI single in the third, and Brandon Nimmo tied the game 3-3 with his two-run triple later in the inning. J.D. Martinez punctuated the inning with a fourth and final run for the Mets with a second RBI triple.

The Mets remain in fourth place in the division, trailing the first-place Philadelphia Phillies by a growing 16.5-game margin, and 2.5 games behind the third-place Nationals (27-31), who they will look to gain ground on during the series. Washington is coming off a 5-2 win over the Cleveland Guardians, in a series they lost 2-1.
