Is energy healing legit? ›

The theoretical basis of healing has been criticised as implausible; research and reviews supportive of energy medicine have been faulted for containing methodological flaws and selection bias, and positive therapeutic results have been determined to result from known psychological mechanisms.

In Reiki treatment, practitioners will place their hands over various parts of a person's body and transfer healing energy. During a session, practitioners may focus their energy on the sources of specific conditions. Typically a single treatment session will last 45–90 minutes.

Reiki therapy has been practiced for about a century. Yet, it's occasionally been associated with side effects like discomfort and tiredness. There's also limited scientific evidence and regulation behind the practice. Other potential disadvantages of reiki include inconsistent results and paying out of pocket.

Energy healing training can take as little as a few weekends or a couple of years, and courses may be in person or online. Specific modalities such as basic Reiki training, for instance, are commonly taught in a weekend retreat format, but Master-level Reiki training may require a year or longer of intense study.

God has provided many ways for us to access His healing power. A study through Scripture will reveal the many avenues God uses to heal us. The prayer of faith, the laying on of hands, anointing with oil, and the gifts of the Spirit are just some of the methods God uses to deliver His healing power to His people.

Energy healing can be used as a complementary practice alongside other types of therapy and medical treatment. There's no evidence that energy healing can cure specific physical or mental health conditions.

The studies to date are typically small, and not every study is well designed. However, overlapping data from some of the stronger studies support the ability of Reiki to reduce anxiety and pain, and suggest its usefulness to induce relaxation, improve fatigue and depressive symptoms, and strengthen overall wellbeing.

It has been shown that Reiki can increase the efficacy of other types of healing. If you are already in good health, regular Reiki treatments can enhance your ability to respond to stress and serve as a form of preventative medicine. It's good self-care.
