What is considered passing for vision screening? ›

4 years old: the critical line to pass screening is the 20/40 (10/20) line. 5 years and older: the critical line to pass screening is 20/32 (10/16) or 20/30 (10/15) line depending on the chart used. Must be able to identify the majority of the 20/50 (10/25) line with each eye.

6 months and up: Your pediatrician will continue to check the red reflex, pupils, and external eye structures. In addition, they will check if each of your child's eyes will look at and appropriately follow a toy or face. They will also look for signs of strabismus (eye misalignment or "wandering eye.")

What if the red reflex test is abnormal or if there is a 'failed vision screening' test? This happens when an abnormal red reflex triggers the photoscreener's 'risk factor' settings in one or both of your child's eyes. These risk factors can tell us if your child could be at risk for decreased vision in the future.

Screener survey best practices

Ask open-ended questions about behaviors, feelings, habits, and past actions.. Don't ask leading questions that hint at what the 'correct' answer might be. Avoid 'yes' or 'no' questions. Provide an 'other' option on multiple choice questions.

This means that the smallest line on the eye chart that you can read at 20 feet can be read by someone with perfect vision who is standing 100 feet away. In a regular Snellen chart, you can only miss 2 or less for each eye. If you miss more than 2 letters, you have to move up to the next line.

The patient's age plus the tens digit of the denominator of his or her visual acuity should be ≤8. "If it equals eight, vision is great! Nine or more, vision is poor."

You can keep an eye out for signs that your baby has vision problems that require attention, such as not following objects, rubbing their eyes, holding objects close to their face, and appearing cross-eyed most of the time.

Babies don't develop vision for distance until they are around 12 months old, but if they are showing signs that their sight is not developing properly, they will be prescribed glasses.

Many schools conduct vision screenings as a service to try to identify vision problems that may affect their students' academic performance… but are they reliable? The simple answer is, no. These vision screenings are very limited, and are NOT a substitute for a comprehensive eye examination performed by an eye doctor.

Having 20/40 vision is not generally considered “bad.” While it may present minor challenges in tasks like reading distant text, it's typically manageable in daily life. Most people with this level of visual acuity can drive without correction, and many find it doesn't substantially disrupt their lifestyle.
